I have a small network here too (14 nodes around) with every kind of IP
address (10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x). All nodes are configured to broadcast
OLSR packets to 255.255.255.255 and this just work.

That is correct. Then ping is possible only when OLSR has added routes
and then it works. BTW, ping from node A to node B will only work if
node A has a route to node B and node B has a route to node A (and the
same on every intermediate nodes of course).
