Since the beginning of this year, I am in a EU project that pays me to
work on the next generation OLSRd code. So I expect things to move
faster than in the last years. :)

The new OLSRd will be built around the OLSRv2 protocol with a
compatibility layer for OLSRv1 if everything works well.
