If one believes http://hintjens.com/blog:111, GitHub was far from a
non-profit organization.

Well, there are commercial (because you have to pay for it unless
you're a student) private/proprietory repos at GitHub.

IMHO the real commercial ones have ATM a serious problem with a fat
software producer/vendor like M$FT getting their hands on the repos.
And moving now somewhere else is very probably too late as GitHub
surely has backups.

To make the long story short: If you really want to keep it
private/propriatory, you must self-host your repos or you are at the
mercy of whatever happens outside of your area of influence ....

And yes, all of that doesn't hold for free/open-source/... repos
because everyone can clone them every day ....
