I have to agree with Markus on this.

0.5.6-r7 has been a really bad apple in the 0.5.6 history. Olsrd contained a 
small memory leak for long time (and nobody found it), but with the r7 release 
one optimization we did accidently made it a lot worse. Which was a good thing 
because we were able to fix it pretty quickly and a bad thing, because Debian 
took exactly this version for their unstable branch.

There have been 385 commits in the stable branch since 0.5.6-r7. One of them 
might fix your problem. Others have fixed a lot of other problems.

So maybe it would be a good idea to talk with the leader of your group at 
university about the bad choice of OLSRd version. Maybe you can persuade them 
to change to a reasonable one.
