John, Andrew,

if something segfaults immediatley, the OpenWrt base has an incompatible 
uclibc. You need to build olsrd with your own flavor of buildroot then. OTA 
(Over the air) Updates of OpenWrt is a more complicated task. Depends on the 
Flash Filesys for root (JFFS2 or CRAMFS). Had some success in the past using 
a chrooted environment in /tmp and use the mtd command. Be sure to flash a 
trx of a know state :)
