Joe,

no more urban legends please. Freifunk (as other Firmwares) relies on the 
CSS broadcom driver (wl.o). There _is_ as multi-bss version around - but 
that is not working. You will - sooner or later - detect, that the wifi 
driver is the critical compontent here with a lot of side effects:

- B mode only (solved in Freifunk with a _hack_)
- IBSS splits (same as above)
- No 2.6.xx kernel (no wl.o for that)
- OSS driver not useable (you may _scan_, but no connect)
