quick and dirty:

if your network is routable you can install the mDNS plugin on the
nodes and chat serverless with a buddy list using Pidgin, iChat etc
etc You can also make audio/video with those softwares.

do you want to integrate the chat application into the router ? Needs
some code because the mDNS plugin will not catch traffic done by the
node itself. I investigated into that some months ago. You would beed
to mix dbus avahi anche the mDNS plugin together to have a finished
and drinkable cocktail :)
