Hey,
to grab link info is an overall problem - to be solved on other layers
(means: not by the routing daemon). So one may want to catch up with the
news. Here's a snippet:
Last wednesday, I've talked to felix. He currently re-implements / revises
the madwifi minstrel rate control stuff for ath5k. He is totally aware of
the need for an API here - which (hopefull) shows up in the linux kernel one
day. Felix says, the minstrel rate ctrl algo should be compatible/usable
with other linux wifi drivers as well (all mac80211 - with the exception of
intel, intel has their own rate control and it look like that they
will stick with it for a longer time).
As a summary: it may be worth the time to monitor ath5k/minstrel. Maybe the
BSD folk can be convinced to contribute/adapt the upcoming API (at least do
translate the output of BSD-iwlist-ata mentioned by john).
