yes, that compatibility is very nice. so you can run slightly outdated
software on outdated hardware, and wait 10 years before upgrading
hardware :-)
within freifunk leipzig network we have f.i. several

* linksys wrt54g still with openwrt white russian
 *** olsr.org - 0.5.5 *** Build date: 2008-02-06 20:16:12 on wws-7

* nanostation (without M) with openwrt backfire
 *** olsr.org -  0.6.1-git_-hash_5a  Build date: 2010-12-06

* virtual machines with openwrt barrier breaker
*** olsr.org -  0.6.6.2-git_cb59

* newer devices with openwrt chaos calmer (and dd)
*** olsr.org - 0.9.0.3-git.. Build date: 2016-01-31

some years ago the common proposal was to have at least the gateway
nodes (with hna or vpn..) and backbone on a newer version
