You could try something like this:
# wlan0: WLAN MANET interfacea, ath5k driver
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
wireless-mode ad-hoc
wireless-channel 11
address (yours)
netmask 255.255.0.0
broadcast 255.255.255.255
up iw dev wlan0 ibss join "(your ibss)" 2462 (your cell MAC address)
up echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/wlan0/disable_ipv6
up echo 14400 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/neigh/wlan0/base_reachable_time
# key d:0:(yours)
WPA doesn't work yet on ad hoc links with >2 nodes
WEP doesn't make sense a lot....
On the iw line: I use a mix of settings in the interfaces file and the iw up command.
I preferred the modified madwifi ahdemo static ad hoc mode (no scans). I switched to ath5k recently , following others. Ath5k ad hoc isn't perfect, but it works.
