Thanks a lot. I think this also will help me. 

May be, when I do not have data packets I could do trace route to find the hops and when I have data packets I could check TTL.

The IP header contains a TTL field, which is a hopcount starting with 64 or 
128 (most times).

try tcpdump... ;)
