I don't know exactly which version of the atheros drivers you use in  
openwrt trunk rev 10500 but ... this sounds extremely like
a well known atheros bug where sometimes you don;t see packets (on  
layer 2 / in the driver!)
Can you confirm that static routes with ad-hoc mode work?
