ok, this makes it totally valid.

i'am ok with the patchset if we make it default off and
add an config option for that...

i'am not sure if sucking in 'ethtool.h' is really
needed. maybe it is enough to ask e.g.  '/sys/class/net/eth0.2/operstate'?
is it polled or does ethtool.h gives you an event?
