Ok, to document what I found:
I can NOT reproduce this on my laptop (Fedora 17):

I CAN reproduce it on one of our targets (Voyage Linux):

So now we're down to a kernel problem, since olsrd interfaces directly
with the kernel when doing these netlink operations.
