It only offloads those steps to the OpenWrt project.
Instead we will setup a webserver, we will pack and upload a tarball,
we will change the makefile and we will rebuild it.
A tarball can be mirrored, downloaded with a variety of tools, it can
be processed without specific client software and moved around easly.
It usually carries a descriptive version number and is self contained.
Instead when using git we rely on a single upstream repo (olsr.org has
been down at least twice while this discussion lasted) and funny sha1
hashes which are far from obvious when looking at them and wondering
whether they're newer or older than another given version.
