Yes and no. We added the hash to identify that some people compiled a 
different source than the git commit would say. We do not really care 
about the binary, but its a hint to find out what was compiled.

If the git commit is present, we can easily identify the version of our 
code it depends on. After this we can check if we can reconstruct the 
source (for example by applying some OpenWRT patches).

But if they are bugfix patches, we need them in our repository anyways.

Yes, that would we one way to do it. If we can guarantee that only 
patches get into the stable branch that have been reviewed and are 
bugfixes (outside completely new releases of course).
