I learnt network programming from "UNIX Network Programming", by Richard
Stevens. In the second edition, it's been split into two volumes, you
only want the first one:
W. Richard Stevens. UNIX Network Programming, Volume 1, Second Edition:
Networking APIs: Sockets and XTI. Prentice Hall, 1998, ISBN 0-13-490012-X.
Parts of it are obsolete (notably the bits about TLI and XTI), but
I think it's still the best book about sockets programming.
