Hey,

you should consider to remove some softs (go to make menuconfig and change 
from asterisk to "M"). Here's the "df" output of one of my 4MB-Flash-Devices 
running whiterussian:

Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root                  896       896         0 100% /rom
/dev/mtdblock/4           2432      1360      1072  56% /rom/jffs
none                       896       896         0 100% /

That already includes rrd, tcpdump, olsrd, iptraf, a socks proxy etc. That's 
an embedded device. Just remove libxml, libjava, libopenssl, samba...
