the problem with adhoc-mode on laptops always was, that the hardware and 
drivers are often buggy because adhoc-support does not seem to be of 
high priority to the manufacturers (nor to open source driver 
developers). i regularly see laptops that are unable to join the network 
or cause bssid-splits.

i don't know if that gets better or worse with newer hardware and/or 
with the most common cell phone chipsets. that would be the most 
important factor to the question of being a big hurdle or not, i guess...

but having dedicated APs / VAPs covering an entire area seems 
unrealistic to me at the moment, so an adhoc solution might be the only 
realistic option..
