Hallo Henning,

you are right: it simply adds an ip addr to the tunnel iface - which works and 
of course is the reason for the new routing entry in the "local" table. git 
pull also works now. Here's my current status for smargw:

linux-2.4.30(cli) works
linux-2.6.30(cli) works (so I expect all clients to work)

linux-2.4(srv) works (no tunl0.rp_filter file, but seems not necessay)
linux-2.6.31(srv) works too (if manual net.ipv4.conf.tunl0.rp_filter=1)
linux-2.6.18(srv,XEN-kernel) doesn't work (no tunl0.rp_filter file)

I think I'll try 2.6.24 and 2.6.30 as a srv. I still haven't evaluated the 
root cause for the rp_filter quirks. I think your setip-patch should be 
pushed.
