Fine with me. I have no strong opinion which default is the lesser
problem - packagers and developers should know what they do anyways.

Is was and is already: Makefile line 33-37 (at least on Hannes' tip
version - no other around ATM)

I don't know what went wrong though.
Hmm, is STRIP in the environment defined (because you a cross-compiler)?
`make` behaves IMHO not intuitively with "?=" and pre-defined
environment variables.
