Hm, just  a brief quess on my side:

Maybe you want to filter out a specific route based on this.
For example some times we had a HNA 0/0 black hole in our networks.
Because somebody (mis)configured his/her router that way.
Usually we found the IP adr of that person and simply iptables -j  
DROP'ed it.

This would be one application.
I am sure there are others...
