This does sound useful.  If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like you can use VPN connections to reach nodes that route traffic to the internet.  And also have multiple nodes which provide these VPN connections to the internet. I could see that being used to provide some level of anonymization for mesh traffic to the internet.

This VPN gateway could also then be running Tor, so that traffic from a mesh node would be encrypted to that VPN/Tor gateway, then over Tor to the internet.
